Your child may have a subconjunctival hemorrhage, a small leakage of blood from the tiny blood vessels in the white part of the eye. There should not be any pain or discomfort, and it is not dangerous.
Most commonly, a parent notices that the white part of the eye is bright red and the child cannot relate this to any particular activity, such as coughing, sneezing, or lifting something very heavy.
Call your doctor if there is associated pain, or it does not get better over the next few days.
