Although it may have felt like skipped beats, the sensation is caused by premature electrical activity in the upper chambers (premature atrial beats) or lower chambers (premature ventricular beats) of the heart. These "extra" beats are not dangerous but it can produce an uncomfortable sensation since we don't normally feel our heart beating.
You shouldn't have any other symptoms besides the palpitations. If you did have other symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness, call your doctor's office for advice.
