Breathing through the nose helps to put moisture (humidity) in the air. If your child breathes through the mouth instead, especially while sleeping, the air will be drier, which can irritate your child's throat. Try adding moisture to the air by using a cool-mist vaporizer (humidifier) in your child's room. Make sure to clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions every few days.
Call your doctor if your child's symptoms do not improve after a few days with this treatment.
